Temples and Thai Culture

One of the things that Thailand is most well known for as to be the many beautiful temples all over the country. As a Buddhist country, temples are an important part of Thai culture. In Thai, a temple is known as a “wat”. There are several particularly famous temples that have key aspects of interest, for example:

  • Wat Phra Kaew – The Temple of the Emerald Buddha
  • Wat Arun – The Temple of Dawn
  • Wat Saket
  • Wat Suthat

Although temple architecture in Thailand has seen many changes over the years, all of the temples adhere to the same principles. In Thai culture, temples have two parts –

  1. The Phutthawat (Thai: พุทธาวาส) is the area which is dedicated to Buddha.
  2. The Sangkhawat (Thai: สังฆาวาส) contains the living quarters of the monks.
